While I was the Pikes Peak Writers Conference last month, the discussions which got me most jazzed were the ones about Middle Grade fiction. I've had a MG idea in my head for about a year now, floating around with a bunch of other stuff--things like "I really should lose ten pounds," "I wish I could find that cordless phone we're missing," and "I hope Boy isn't missing any immunizations." I'm still ignoring everything else floating around in my cranium, but I've decided I'm going to birth my MG idea.
Just like a baby takes about 9 months to get the heck out, that's how long I'm hoping my new novel will take. I started writing a couple weeks ago, so I should be done by January. And, yeah, no varicose veins involved with this birthing project!
I'll let you know when the book really starts kicking, and if the little sucker comes out prematurely, all the better, I say. (my kids were each a little early--oldest was three weeks early with zero indication, just a middle of the night "I think my water broke"--and it worked out just fine).
How long is gestation for your books?

Good luck with your baby! Is it a boy or a girl? (the main character I mean!)
I generally write picture books or poetry...it usually takes 1-3 months for the first rough draft to be done. I am working on my first chapter book, and I'm halfway done in a month but set it aside for my picture book writing week (that I am finding I'm too busy for this week!).
KELLY: I'm wondering whether you're missing your chapter book. I'm always missing the project I'm not working on.
The main character is a twelve-yearold girl. I have one of those myself, and I've read the first couple pages to her. She offered a couple very helpful suggestions, one of which I went to work on immediately.
I thought of you while watching American Idol!
You're right it is like having a baby the whole process is nerve wracking and could be both fun and anxious at the same time. Also they both make me crave chocolate.
Gestation for my books varies widely. Nonfiction books I tend to knock out in a matter of months. Fiction however, particularly the project I'm into now, can take me a very long time to "birth". Let you know how long when it's done. Great blog by the way!
T. ANNE: I hadn't thought about the chocolate! I'm already craving it now and I haven't even had breakfast!
ALEXANDER FIELD: I'll have to read more into your blog...I want to see if you give any details about your fiction...your blog is great, too!
Great analogy! I'm still trying to figure out how long my gestation period is...
The first draft of my MG took me about three months. Took about eight months of revising to feel good enough to allow others to read it. And of course, I'm still revising.
Anita, OMG -I think you are absolutely right! I have been wanting to write the chapter book (I love love love my main character), but felt obligated to do the PB thing since that is really my thing. Oh well, today's the last day of the PB week, so I will rally on PB style. I am so not getting a lot done, but I figure a little is more than nothing!
My urban fantasy novels take 6-8 months, including revisions. I'm starting a MG novel as well so we'll see. I think it will take less time because, yanno, less words equals less time, right? But I've been waaaaaay wrong before, so...
KELLY: I want to read your chapter book!
C.J.: I know exactly what you're talking about...everything takes longer for me than I think it will! I'm hoping that thinking of my MG in terms of human gestation motivates me.
